CHEMISTRY

With Smart Sonic, you always have the choice of using the best chemistry 440-R® SMT Detergent, in our proven, certified and guaranteed stencil cleaning process. Or, select another chemistry and design your own process. Either way, Smart Sonic has been used longer, by more SMT assemblers and recommended by more stencil manufacturers than any other stencil cleaning process.

440-R SMT Detergent will last for weeks, or even months, in your Smart Sonic Stencil Cleaner. However, because of the potential for outside contaminants that can create odors and other complications and because dissolved lead levels from solder paste will compound over time and create a potential hazard, it is recommended that the wash solution be changed on a regular basis. Every two or three weeks is recommended.

440-R SMT Detergent
Voted the Best in the World

No other stencil-cleaning chemistry has received more awards for cleaning and environmental excellence
The Global Technology Award, The SMT Vision Award, The Canadian High Technology Award, Nepcon's Milton S. Kiver Award and nominated for the U.S. Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award.

No other stencil-cleaning chemistry has been verified by the U.S. EPA's Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Program for specific parameters of environmental safety, user safety and cleaning efficiency
Other cleaning chemistries may say they "meet" environmental regulations, but Smart Sonic's 440-R SMT Detergent is the only chemistry to meet the rigid standards of the U.S. EPA's ETV Program.

No other stencil-cleaning chemistry has met the test of time
Smart Sonic introduced 440-R SMT Detergent in 1990 and has never needed to modify the formulation. Hundreds of other stencil cleaning chemistries have come and gone causing users to change their cleaning process, modify their waste handling and purchase additional equipment.

No other stencil-cleaning chemistry has been able to clean all types of solder paste
440-R SMT Detergent has been able to clean all solder pastes introduced since 1990. Whenever a Smart Sonic customer changed solder pastes or flux types, 440-R SMT Detergent was able to support the change.

No other stencil-cleaning chemistry has saved its users tens of thousands of dollars since 1990.
Smart Sonic customers using 440-R SMT Detergent have not needed to purchase additional stencil-cleaning equipment or change chemistries when required to change solder pastes or flux types. RA, RMA, water washable, no-clean, synthetic and lead-free have all cleaned using the same machine and the same chemistry.

No other stencil cleaning chemistry is completely VOC free
Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) regulations continue to mount while lead-free solder pastes have proven to be more tenacious. Some suppliers have found the need to revert back to VOC solvent additives to supplement their cleaning chemistries. The SCAQMD Clean Air Solvent (CAS) Certification requires that chemistries contain no more than 25 grams per liter of VOCs, down from 50 grams per liter just a few years ago. 440-R SMT Detergent has been able to clean all lead-free pastes without the aid of VOC solvents.

No other chemistry is as versatile as 440-R SMT Detergent.
The superior cleaning action of 440-R SMT Detergent works well in spray-in-air, ultrasonic and spray-under-immersion machines as well as manual cleaning applications.

No other stencil cleaning chemistry can also clean SMD adhesive and post solder flux residue
Other suppliers need to provide two or more separate chemistries to effectively clean solder paste, SMD adhesives and post solder flux residues causing different waste streams, cleaning processes and the possible need for additional equipment. 440-R SMT Detergent users need to inventory only one chemistry for all of these applications.

No other stencil-cleaning chemistry is as economical as 440-R SMT Detergent
Chemistry cost for a semi-automatic Model 1500 ultrasonic stencil cleaner is approximately $65.00 per month independent of how many stencils are cleaned. The cost for fully automatic models is slightly higher.

No other stencil-cleaning chemistry is used by over 1000 assemblers worldwide
Smart Sonic customers have been satisfied with the performance of 440-R SMT Detergent since 1990 and continue to use it for safe and effective cleaning of stencils, screens, misprinted PCBs, pallets, oven radiators and other flux contaminated tooling. RoHS approved.

No other stencil-cleaning chemistry does all of the above
Yet 440-R SMT Detergent is non-hazardous and user friendly with a mild pleasant odor.

DESCRIPTION

SMART SONIC'S 440-R SMT Detergent is a mild alkaline formulation designed to remove RA, RMA, No Clean and Water Washable (OA) solder pastes from screens, stencils and misprinted PCBs at ambient (low) temperature. 440-R SMT Detergent is also very effective in removing wet SMD adhesives from stencils and misprinted substrates and removing post solder flux residues from pallets, oven radiators and other tooling. It contains no CFCs, VOCs, terpenes, alcohol or other hazardous ingredients and performs best in ultrasonic cleaning equipment.

440-R SMT Detergent is a Certified Technology of the California Environmental Protection Agency (1999) and verified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Program as part of the Smart Sonic Stencil Cleaning Process. It is also certified as a "Clean Air Chemistry" by the South Coast Air Quality Management District's (AQMD) CAS Program (1997).

440-R SMT Detergent is not consumed during the solder paste cleaning process. After the initial charge, no addition of make-up chemistry is required until the wash water is changed. The wash water should be changed, for preventative maintenance purposes, every 2-3 weeks to prevent potential contamination and unpleasant odors.

Cleaning applications, other than solder paste, may require a filtration system to reduce "loading" of the bath. Consult factory.

While 440-R SMT Detergent will perform well in "hard water" (500 ppm), it is recommended that either soft or DI water be used in order to prevent mineral deposits (water spots) on stencils and ionic contamination on PCBs.
